Watercolour portrait of John McLaren, aged 60, merchant

From John Sowden's notebooks:

"Was born 1830(?) at Falkirk Stirlingshire, educated National Schools. Family removed to Manchester in 1840(?) where his father was headmaster of the Scottish Church (?) School. Commenced work at 14 in a shipping house(?), remained nine years and then went to the firm of J Ackroyd and Sons, Halifax, for seven years as head of a department. Came to Bradford and with a partner commenced business on his own account until 1894 when he retired to Leamington for his health and leaving his two sons to manage the business who both died.

He was a member of the Bradford Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Council and Chairman of the Law Amendment Commission and afterwards Chairman of the Council. He was a member of the Council of the Technical College and was also a member of the Bradford School Board for many years. He was made a Justice of the Peace for Bradford and also a Justice of the Peace for Leamington.

He filled many other offices of less importance both in Bradford and in Leamington. He was an ardent Liberal and did good work for the cause. He died December 25, 1920, Windermere."
