The Fannings of Wexford and Dublin

Fanning family tree

Introduction

Daniel Francis Dineen married Maud Helen Fanning in Toronto in 1899. Maud was the daughter of John Fanning and Eliza McCarthy, who met in Ottawa, returned to Dublin and then moved back to Canada. During the Irish Civil War many records of families in Ireland were destroyed. Consequently it's not always possible to trace Irish ancestors as well as English or Scottish ancestors after the creation of official records in 1837.

The Fannings are an Irish family thought to be from the area of County Limerick with the stronghold of Baile an Fhainínigh (Fanningstown) and some lands in present day Tipperary. Judging by the number of Fanning’s in 19th Century directories in Ireland and overseas it’s a comparatively small family compared with other surnames in the Irish diaspora. The Fanning family related to the ancestors of Maud Fanning appear to come from County Wexford.
